A dedicated space for practical work and organised storage
Newton and Frost Fencing Ltd, also known as NFF, manufactures timber garden workshops for hobbies, workbenches, tools, machinery and larger storage needs. The size, doors, windows and internal specification can be adjusted around how the building will be used.
Do you need a shed or a workshop?
The main difference is how much working space, access and internal organisation you need.
Choose a garden shed when:
- The main use is storing tools and garden equipment.
- A compact footprint is important.
- You do not need room around a workbench.
- Single-door access is normally sufficient.
Choose a garden workshop when:
- You need space for a workbench or machinery.
- Wider or double-door access would be useful.
- You want additional windows or internal organisation.
- The building will be used regularly for practical work.
Start with the roof and access
The roof shape and door arrangement affect how the workshop looks, where it can sit and how easily equipment can be moved.
Apex Roof Workshop
A traditional two-sided roof with useful internal height for benches, storage and taller equipment.
Double-Door Workshop
Wider access makes it easier to move machinery, bicycles, mowers and bulky equipment.
Bespoke Garden Workshop
Adjust the size, footprint, access, windows and internal layout around the available space.

The core workshop specification is covered
Your quotation will confirm the final specification, but these are the main components included within the standard workshop.

Standard construction
- Ex 125 × 16mm redwood shiplap cladding
- Ex 75 × 47mm smooth-finished framework
- Tongue-and-groove roof boarding
- Heavy-duty green mineral felt
- Ex 150 × 16mm tongue-and-groove floor
- 900mm ledged and braced timber door
- Galvanised hinges and pad bolt
- Fixed Perspex windows dependent on size
Door and access options
Choose single doors, double doors, wider machinery access or alternative door positions. A stronger framed and ply-lined door is also available.
Windows and natural light
Add or reposition windows to bring natural light over workbench areas. Reduced glazing can also be chosen where privacy or security is more important.
Floor and roof upgrades
Thicker tongue-and-groove floor and roof boarding can improve rigidity, durability and load support. The strongest flooring option is recommended where heavy machinery will be stored.
Insulation and internal lining
Full insulation, breather membrane and internal lining can be added for improved comfort and moisture management. Ply lining is available as an internal finish.
Electrical package
A full building electrical package can be added for lighting, sockets and powered tools. Connection to the mains must be confirmed separately.
External finish and cladding
Ask about upgraded composite cladding, thicker timber cladding, painted finishes and window or door colour options.
Add-on sections
Additional sections such as log stores, enclosed storage areas or custom layouts can be incorporated into the final design.
A practical space for tools, hobbies and projects
Choose enough room to work comfortably
These sizes provide useful starting points rather than fixed limits. NFF can adjust the footprint around the space, access and intended use.

Prepare the site around the agreed workshop
Larger workshops need suitable access and a stable base. These should be confirmed before manufacture begins.
Agree the exact external dimensions before preparing the base.
Tell NFF about narrow gates, walls, slopes or restricted routes.
The base must be level, stable and appropriate for the building and equipment.

Timber garden workshop FAQs
How much does an NFF garden workshop cost?
The final cost depends on size, doors, windows, flooring, insulation, electrics and site access. Use the instant quote or contact NFF for current pricing.
What is the difference between a workshop and a shed?
A shed is normally chosen mainly for storage. A workshop usually provides more space for workbenches, machinery, wider access and internal organisation.
Can the workshop be built to a bespoke size or shape?
Yes. NFF workshops are made to order, allowing the dimensions, footprint, doors, windows and internal layout to be adjusted around unusual sites, angled boundaries and specific requirements.
Can I have double doors?
Yes. Double doors or wider access can be included where larger tools, bicycles, mowers or machinery need to be moved in and out.
Can a timber workshop be insulated?
A full insulation package, breather membrane and internal lining can be added to improve comfort and moisture management.
Can electrics be added?
A workshop electrical package can be added for lighting, sockets and tools. The supply and final connection to the mains must be confirmed separately.
What base does a workshop need?
The workshop needs a level, stable base suitable for the building and any equipment stored inside. Heavy machinery may require a stronger base and floor.
Do I need planning permission?
Many domestic garden workshops fall within permitted development rights, but limits apply. Check the current requirements for your property and contact the local planning authority where necessary.
Can machinery be stored in the workshop?
Yes, provided the doors, flooring and base are specified around the size and weight of the machinery. The strongest floor upgrade is recommended for heavier equipment.
Is delivery and installation included?
We welcome enquiries across East Sussex and West Sussex. Free delivery and installation are available for eligible buildings within 40 miles of Horam, TN21 9HJ, subject to the product, site access and quotation. Send us your postcode so we can confirm coverage and any charges before you order.
How long does manufacture take?
The current workshop information states an approximate lead time of two to three weeks. This may vary with specification and workload.
Can I visit NFF before ordering?
Yes. NFF is based in Horam, East Sussex. Contact the team before travelling to confirm which display buildings are currently available to view.
